Interview with Ezra
Swerdlow
Executive
Producer: Wag the Dog, Return to Paradise,
Cop Land, First Wives Club, Waiting to Exhale, Alien III
SSI: What
was it like having your film, Wag the Dog, multi-nominated for an Oscar ?
EZRA: An
Oscar or even a nomination is nice, but really the greatest feeling is sitting
in any given theater in the world with an audience enjoying your film. That's
the real award.
SSI: What
are your Oscar picks for the Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture this
year and why?
EZRA: Best
Original Screenplay: "Being John Malkovitch" - because it breaks all the rules
and builds them back up again. It creates an unbelievable world. Best Picture,
"The Insider" - because it deals with a real story which both enlightens and
characterizes the ture issues being dealt with.
SSI: At the
past Oscar ceremonies, what is the most amazing sight that even you, an established
producer, were in awe of?
EZRA: Marlon
Brando not accepting the Best Actor award for "The Godfather" and having a
young Native American woman accept in his place.
SSI: What
types of Scripts or Stories interest you most?
EZRA: I
appreciate stories that move me emotionally, either with humor or drama. In
general, stories about real people in extraordinary circumstances.
SSI: What
has been your best experience as a filmmaker?
EZRA: Every
movie provides a different experience. Each film has been unique and special
because of the commitment required to bring it to the screen.
SSI: What
advice would you give budding filmmakers and screenwriters?
EZRA: Believe
in yourself. Believe in your instincts, and seek the advice of professionals
in your specific area of interest. Learn from the experienced professionals,
and use them on important jobs.
